And the least religious state is. . . .
I frequently get into "discussions" with individuals about the most secular/least religious parts of the country. I, of course, maintain that New England is, while many others claim that the Northwest is. Well, Gallup has put all that to rest - at least for now. The least religious states, according to Gallup, are (in order): Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. These are the only states where fewer than 50% of those polled expressed that religion was important in their every day life.

Given that even the least religious states boast numbers in the 40-50% range, America still is a lot more religious than other industrialized nations (Europe, Japan). Just a thought.
Oh, and thanks for stopping by my blog. I met a guy at Boston Temple SDA the other day who mentioned he goes to one of your churches, and I outbursted with..."NEW ENGLAND PASTOR!" After some confusion with him and people around me, I explained that I read your blog. Sadly, I don't remember who that person was.

Yes, even though New England is so low, it pales in comparison to Europe. I spent a year in Scotland, where about 5% of the population goes to church.
A guy at the Boston Temple from one of my churches? Hmm. . . I'm not sure who that would have been - but he shouldn't have been playing hooky from my church!!! ;-)
I can believe that many New Englanders answered that religion is not important in their lives, because so many are very negative toward organized religion also known as "church".
